Samara 8 Decembre, 2005, part 2

December 8th, 2005

After the last post we went for lunch at what we call now “our house” on the beach, and a group of horses were on the beach, hanging out by themselves, they were frolicking here and there, galloping from one end to the other then disappeared only to come back inches from us in a grand gallop which kind of scared us. We had been seeing horses on their own on this trip, and were wondering how there could still be wild horses here. Our teacher informed us that they were always free, but they always come home, like cats. They find their way back, but it is pretty common to see horses on their own in the way.

Graduation diner… Wow, what fun! First we had a sort of ceremony at which we received certificates by our teachers and had to give a speech which I promptly avoided and for which Mike got accosted and was forced to speak. But Mike is good at that!
The staff of our school had a table for their Christmas diner and we, the students ate at different little tables spread on the grounds of this restaurant at the beach. Mike and I had a table with Eric from Quebec and the table next to us included Leah from Berkeley, and Laurel who lives here now. Other students were here but these are the main ones we hung out with last night. Our teacher, Farid, had asked a friend of his to come and play the guitar and sing typical songs from the Guanacaste region which he did wonderfully. He even came at each table to sing for us, then Farid joined him and our director, Victor and Mike even played “the bottles”. If was quite a lot of fun even though we didn’t know any of the songs, and there is definitely a sort of inner language that we obviously don’t get since we only spent 2 weeks here but that you can tell is completely local and it would require living here for quite a while to get!
Nonetheless, we had a blast, even just clapping along was a lot of fun, and quite instructive. It seems music and dance are very important entertainments here and even though we were in a tiny place like Samara, we had probably more fun than we have in a big city like Los Angeles… And we thought we were going to get bored… ohohh!

We went to bed rather late for here, around midnight… We usually fall asleep before 11pm! What debaucherie… hahaha
Quelle debaucherie… hahaha
